CLASS POLICIES AND ETIQUETTE

COURTESY ~ INTEGRITY ~ SELF CONTROL~ PERSEVERANCE ~ INDOMITABLE SPIRIT

Age for participation:

Our traditional class is suitable for children ages 7 and up. For children under the age of 10, we require that a parent or designated adult remain in the do-jang during class for the first 4 classes.

Preparation for class:

All students must have a water bottle.  Yellow belts and above must have a mouth guard at every class.  All males must come to class wearing an athletic cup.

Uniforms and clothing

New students and white belts may wear any comfortable clothing that allows for stretching and jumping. Shoes, socks, and hats shall not be worn.  Jewelry shall not be worn in class as it presents a hazard.

A dobok (uniform) is required after white belt.  A plain white or black undershirt may be worn instead of the top on hot days.  Underclothes should not interfere with the workout and should not protrude from the uniform.

The Do-jang.

We are grateful for the opportunity to use The Montrose Elks Club as our practice space.  Please remember to demonstrate respect and bow in and out of the do-jang.  Please help us keep the space tidy, and clean up any spills or messes promptly.  Food may not be consumed in the do-jang (except for parties)  and students shall not use phones, ipads, or other screens in the do-jang.   Running and horse-play is not allowed.

Before, During, and After Class

Students are encouraged to arrive 15 minutes early for class.  Early arrival enables students to practice on their own and with other students.  Students should plan to stretch and/or practice patterns (forms) while waiting for class to begin.

We shall begin each class promptly at the designated time and we ask that students respect each other's time and arrive early with sufficient time to change into their uniforms.  Students must be in the do-jang in appropriate clothing to be considered on time.

All students shall help with cleanup after class (up to 10 minutes).  We must be cleared out of our space within 15 minutes of the end of class and all students and families must be out of the building. Parents should plan for pickup between 8:05-8:15)

Belt levels and advancement

With regular attendance and instructor approval colored belts  may test for advancement 4 times per year (depending on readiness level and attendance record).   There is a minimum waiting period of 6 months prior to testing for black belt and students shall have had 1 year of teaching (helping out in class).    Students who have earned a belt rank with any school in the past may retain their rank, but will be required to demonstrate knowledge and patterns for all previous levels when advancing to the next belt rank.   REMEMBER- Testing is a privilege not a right- you must train hard, attend class regularly, and ask your instructor for permission to test.

What does it take to become a black belt in Taekwon-Do??

With twice a week formal training and practice at home, an exceptional student could earn a first-degree black belt in our school in  4 years.  In addition to physical training, students wishing to test for black belt must demonstrate a passion for taekwon-do through the embodiment of the 5 tenants of taekwon-do (courtesy, integrity, self-control, perseverance, and indomitable spirit).  This is achieved through:

  • Tournament competition

  • Participation in special training seminars

  • Referee certification

  • Knowledge of Korean terminology, language, and history

  • Assisting the instructor/teaching other students

  • Demonstrating a commitment to our local community (volunteerism)

Earning a black belt is just the beginning of a lifetime journey.   There are 9 levels of black belt in taekwon-do.  To achieve the highest rank of Grand Master requires over 45 years of training and instructing!

Payment:  Payment for each season is due during the 1st week of class.  Checks may be made out to “Montrose Taekwon-Do LLC”.
